3. SPARC 2025 Student Research Conference, Event on April 23rd, 2025

The 2025 SPARC will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, in the SJSU Dias Compean Student Union Meeting Rooms 1B & 4AB.

This year marks the 68th anniversary of SPARC, a longstanding research tradition organized by the Psi Chi International Honor Society and Psychology Department at SJSU.  Since 1957, SPARC has offered undergraduate and graduate psychology students the experience of presenting their research.  Over the years, SPARC has grown into one of the preeminent regional forums for student presentations in psychology and related fields.

Conference presentations will begin as early as 9:10am and will consist of a series of oral presentations, interspersed with three 50-minute poster sessions at 10:50am, 12:20pm, and at 2:50pm.  We are also excited to host two 60-minute Lightning Talks sessions, at 9:50am and 1:10pm, featuring 5-minute research briefs from our graduate students in psychology.

We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating the impressive research efforts of graduate and undergraduate students.  We are expecting a great turnout of talks and posters from researchers at SJSU, the SF Bay area, and beyond.

Certainly, the highlight of our day will be our keynote address, titled “Do you know what you're getting out of your degree in psychology?” by Dr. Jennifer Dyer-Seymour from CSU Monterey Bay.  In this talk, Dr. Deyer-Seymour will discuss the research on college graduates’ foundational skills, such as writing, critical thinking, and collaboration.  U.S. and European employers rate many new collegiate hires’ skills as less than “very proficient,” and U.S. graduate psychology programs cite “poorly written” materials as applicants’ number one fatal flaw.   Focusing on new data out of her lab, Dr. Dyer-Seymour will show the relationship between students’ perceptions about how much their skills have improved during college and how much the students think about learning goals when they study.

*The keynote address will begin at 3:45pm.

4. Applications for Jengyee Prize Now Open! (4/22/25)

The essay must address the following topic: As individuals, we can make the world better in big ways that are often part of a larger, organized effort, or in smaller ways that are consequences of individual choices and actions over a lifetime. Please describe (a) what you, as an individual, have done to make the world a better place; (b) what you have learned from these experiences; and (c) how you see this trajectory extending into the future.

Please address all three questions in the same essay. The activities need not be of a humanitarian nature. The committee would be interested in hearing about technical, social, and other types of activities and advancements through which you have made the world a better place.

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF to Prof. Candace Yano at yano@ieor.berkeley.edu by the deadline: Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 4 PM PT

5. Weekly Health Tip

6. Important Berkeley Way West (BWW) Reminders:

  • It is critical that everyone accessing the building after hours or entering key-carded areas of the building be sure to tag (use key card) to access these spaces for themselves, when at Berkeley Way West. This especially applies after hours and at all times to any floors and interior spaces that require key card access.
  • Those with key card access are not permitted to allow others into these secured spaces (tail-gating) for any reason and will lose after-hours access to BWW if they are found breaking this policy.
  • BWW recently sustained extensive damage last year due to a breach of this policy. Your adherence to this policy will contribute to our community safety and security.
