Ceremony Participation vs. Degree List
Students sometimes think that these two things are the same, but they are not. CalCentral has automatically added each student to their anticipated semester to receive their degree based on your semester at UC Berkeley. If you plan to graduate early or stay for the summer/another semester, please see a college adviser. Being on the degree list means that you plan to complete all of your requirements for the degree.
Signing up to participate in the Psychology commencement ceremony means that you wish to celebrate your time at Cal with your loved ones. Students and alumni may participate even if they finished their degree in December 2024; some may participate in the May 2025 ceremony even if they plan to earn an August 2025 or December 2025 degree! -
General Commencement vs. Department Commencement
Commencement, the campus-wide ceremony for all graduating seniors from all majors and their families, includes the Chancellor's address, keynote address, and most of the traditional pomp and circumstance. Keep in mind, the Psychology commencement ceremony is a smaller, more personal celebration for Psychology Graduate and Undergraduate students. It is separate from the general, campus-wide CAL commencement ceremony. Students who wish to also attend the campus-wide ceremony need to register for it separately. More information about registration and tickets for the Campus Wide Commencement ceremony set to be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at California Memorial Stadium can be found here.
Departmental graduations occur separately within their discipline and are more personal, with each graduate walking across the stage to receive a commemorative certificate.
Students can attend either one of the ceremonies, or both. -
Tickets
Please note that tickets are REQUIRED for all guests (including infants). Students participating in the ceremony do not need a ticket to get inside the venue.
The number of tickets allotted for each graduate is determined by the number of students registered to participate in the ceremony.
Tickets are available via Cal Performance online, in-person, and through the phone. Please contact their Ticket Office if you have any questions or need assistance. The Psychology Department is unable to assist with ticket sales.

Diplomas
Diplomas are not presented at the ceremony; they are usually available about 4 to 5 months after the end of the semester. Graduates may pick up their diploma at the Registrar's Office (120 Sproul Hall) or request that it be mailed to them for a charge. To obtain your diploma, you must have all of your fees paid, all library materials returned, and have no other outstanding concerns. For more information, contact the Office of the Registrar.

Photographs
The Psychology Department has made arrangements with GradImages to photograph every graduating student. There will be a professional photographer present during the ceremony. Each student will have a photo taken at the moment they receive the commemorative scroll from the department faculty, as well as a portrait. To be contacted by GradImages about ordering photos, students will need to have given permission to share their contact information during the registration process. For more info about ordering photos, visit the GradImages website.
We understand the desire to get photographs of graduates on this special occasion. During degree conferral, the graduates need clear walkways in the orchestra section of seats in order to walk a full degree conferral path. We respectfully request that guests keep all of the walkways in the orchestra sections clear so the graduates can have the fullest experience possible.

Important InstructionsThe Zellerbach Hall doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for general admission and the ceremony will start promptly at 2:00 pm.
Check in for graduates begin at 12:45pm. Graduates should arrive at Cross Sproul Path by 1pm in cap and gown and be ready to go. Please promptly check in and line up as directed. On-time arrival for graduates are crucial for a smooth run of show. Students arriving after processional has begun will remain outside of Zellerbach Hall until after processional and be escorted to their seat.
Guests should find their seats or mingle in designated areas that is separate from the lineup. To help get everyone ready and start the ceremony on time, we ask that guests kindly avoid congregating in the graduate line-up area.
Upon checking in, graduates will be given a color-coded index card based on seating area. Graduates should print their first and last name, as well as the phonetic spelling of their name. Follow the Student Services staff's instructions.
Although we cannot guarantee that graduates will be able to sit near their friends, chances of sitting together are greatly increased if the entire group line up next to each other in the same line in Cross Sproul Path. The color of the index card indicates whether you will be seated on stage or in the pit. Ask for a card that is the same color as those of your friends' and line up next to each other.
It's not possible to switch name cards, so please make sure you know which seating area you want to sit in (i.e. stage vs. pit) before asking for a corresponding card.
On cue, the lines will march into the Hall and into the student seating. As part of the standard security precaution, graduates will be "wanded" with a hand-held scanner as they enter Zellerbach. If necessary, a student may be asked to step out of line for additional security screening. Please observe the Zellerbach security procedure above and refrain from bringing anything in the prohibited items list.
Please remain standing until the Department Chair signals candidates to be seated.
The first half of the ceremony is dedicated to the announcement of prizes, honors, and speeches.
In the second half of the ceremony:Ph.D. candidates will be hooded individually by their Faculty Advisor.
B.A. candidates will be presented with a commemorative scroll on stage by faculty.
Prof. Ayduk will then end the ceremony. The audience will remain seated while the students leave the stage.
We anticipate the ceremony will last between two and two-and-a-half hours.
