Integrating health and human services: Lessons learned from California's Whole Person Care Pilot Program and Ohio START

California's Medi-Cal Whole Person Care Pilot Program tested whether providing high-risk, high-utilizing Medicaid beneficiaries with care coordination and increased access to social services such as housing support could improve health outcomes and reduce costs.
Ohio START is a cross-systems intervention for families with co-occurring child maltreatment and substance use that relies on rapid screening and referral to substance abuse treatment and linkage to a family peer mentor to expedite caregiver access and engagement in substance abuse treatment, increase likelihood of family reunification, and reduce subsequent maltreatment risk.
