Department of Psychology Faculty Lecture
I briefly review the five broad domains (O-C-E-A-N) that define the Big Five model of personality traits and explain why they have emerged as the dominant model. In contrast to earlier views that personality is "set like plaster," our findings show substantial evidence of change, especially during adolescence but continuing even after age 30. Personality traits interact with environmental variables in shaping a broad range of important life outcomes, such as work, relationships, the composition of our social networks, and reactions to the COVID pandemic.
