Psychology Department Resource Highlight: Psych 199 Listings

What is this?: Psych 199 is the course subject and number that students who are Research Assistants (RAs) in Psychology labs can earn! We (advisors) use the phrase 'Psych 199' to reference undergraduate research in the Psychology Department.

The Psych 199 opportunities are gathered each semester and posted on the website in a Google Document, under the "Psych 199" section. Postings are released the first week of each semester (one week prior to instruction; typically mid August and mid January). They include the labs recruiting, along with RA responsibilities, expectations, and with how to apply to the lab.

Psych 199 credits are open to any major student (you do not need to be a Psychology major), so long as you are working in a Psychology lab (headed by a Psychology faculty member). If you are working in a lab in another department, you can inquire about earning credits with your supervisor!

New and returning RAs can earn Psych 199 credits, up to 3 units each semester. Generally, 1 unit = 3 hours of work per week, for the semester; using that ratio then: 3 units = 9 hours work per week, for the semester. Enrollment codes are emailed to RAs by the Psych SSO team.

There is a maximum number of special studies units that can be applied to your degree by the College of L&S. "No more than 16 units from courses numbered 97, 98, 99, 197, 198, or 199 may be applied to the degree. "

What does being an RA entail?: What you will do exactly may vary by the type of lab you are working in, the skills you have, and what phase the project is in! Modality may vary, with in-person, hybrid, and remote possibilities. Full list of responsiblities and expectations will be included in the Psych 199 postings!

Examples of RA Tasking:

  • Literature Review, Synthesis
  • Data Collection, Analysis
  • Data Entry and Management
  • Running Experiments
  • Coding Behaviors (perhaps from video footage, interviews...)
  • Lab Meetings

General Lab Structure:

  • PI (principal investigator)- often the faculty member
  • Post Doctoral Researcher ("postdoc")- researchers who have already earned their Ph.D.
  • Graduate Students- current Ph.D. candidates
  • Lab Manager- not every lab has one
  • Undergraduate Research Assistants- You!

Important Note: Reminder that this (Psych 199) is one of many ways to get involved in research at UC Berkeley. Other opportunities include: URAP, REP, ULAB, SURF, and more! Students can even secure opportunities informally by talking with GSIs or researchers.

4. First Destination Survey- For Graduating Seniors!

Complete the annual First Destination Survey! For those who aren't aware, our office, Berkeley Career Engagement surveys our graduating seniors (and NOW we're including our Master's students) every year to learn about their plans after graduation (aka: First Destination Survey/FDS).

This valuable information is used to help future students as they embark on their own career exploration, assist our team with understanding service needs and gaps, and provide departments with ROI information that could be useful for future yield events. You can review data from the past 3 years via this link

Our current targeted group of grads are Fall '25 and Spring '26 grads (undergrads and masters only) *Summer '26 grads are not included in this survey cycle.

Here’s the link! https://berkeley.joinhandshake.com/edu/schools/84/first_destination_surveys

5. ImportantBerkeley Way West (BWW) Reminders:

  • It is critical that everyone accessing the building after hours or entering key-carded areas of the building be sure to tag (use key card) to access these spaces for themselves, when at Berkeley Way West. This especially applies after hours and at all times to any floors and interior spaces that require key card access.
  • Those with key card access are not permitted to allow others into these secured spaces (tail-gating) for any reason and will lose after-hours access to BWW if they are found breaking this policy.
  • BWW recently sustained extensive damage last year due to a breach of this policy. Your adherence to this policy will contribute to our community safety and security.
