Research Description

I ask how people "read" each other: what it is about how we look, move, and speak that shapes social impressions, and when perceivers attend to the individual in front of them versus falling back on stereotypes. I study these processes as they unfold during naturalistic interaction, using computational and multimodal methods, and ask how they shift across contexts, from face-to-face to digitally mediated encounters, and across cultures that differ in values and communication styles. The goal is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of person perception and their implications for high-stakes social encounters, such as interracial interaction, job interviews, and patient-caregiver dynamics.
