Vision and Light: Extending the Senses

Science@Cal invites participation in an exciting artistic and scientific event this fall entitled Vision + Light: Extending the Senses. This unique program will run for two evenings on October 27 and 28 as part of the Bay Area Science Festival, and is produced by Science@Cal in partnership with the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, with additional support from the ZEISS Berkeley Brain Microscopy Innovation Center.

Taking the format of an art gallery opening, with live music and refreshments, Vision + Light will display aesthetic images across a range of visual media, which directly emerged from, or were inspired by, scientific research at UC Berkeley. This event will take place in the Energy Biosciences Building, and will be the fourth iteration of an event previously presented as “Art in Science: The intersection of image and research.” All Science@Cal events are free and open to the public.

Our theme for this year’s program examines the creativity and technology behind the process of observation that both scientists and artists use to explore the world. We envision exhibiting scientific imagery which might literally involve light or vision produced by microscopes, telescopes or other sensors, or works that examine more abstract aspects of these ideas, as well as artworks made by scientists unrelated to their research but which inspire and nurture their intellectual curiosity. Imagery may take the form of traditionally framed artwork and photographs, video, sculpture, multi-media work, technology projects, or perhaps media that we do not yet know about! We also welcome hands-on or interactive activities to engage the public.

Submission Deadline: September 16

Jury Notification of Accepted artwork September 28
