How Realistic is Photorealistic?
Modern computer graphics are capable of generating highly photorealistic images. While this can be considered a success for the computer graphics community, it has given rise to complex forensic and legal issues. A compelling example comes in the need to distinguish between computer-generated and photographic images as it pertains to the legality and prosecution of child exploitation in the United States. Professor Farid will describe a series of experiments that measure observersÂ’ ability to distinguish the photographic from the computer-generated, simple steps that can be taken to improve observer accuracy, and preliminary studies that attempt to determine how observers are performing this task.
