   Student Organizations
The Psychology Department has two very active student organizations: Association of Psychology Undergrads (APU) and Associated Students of Psychology (ASP). Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the activities of both groups.

The American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States.

  • Association of Psychology Undergraduates (APU)
Founded in l969, the APU is a student organization whose goals are to facilitate student-student and student-faculty interaction and to provide a forum for student ideas.

The APU provides a vehicle for students to become involved in their own academic and intellectual development. A nominal membership fee is required. The APU publishes the Tolman Tribune containing articles of interest to students, and is available outside 3330 Tolman Hall.

For more information please visit thier web site http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~apu/ or write apu_psyc at berkeley.edu The APU schedule of meetings and activities is posted outside the office, 3330 Tolman Hall, phone 642-7095.
  • Associated Students of Psychology (ASP)
Your Student Service, Academic, and Support Group

Associated Students of Psychology, ASP is a student service organization that provides support for students who are both enrolled in the psychology major, and those interested in the field. The goal is to help students achieve their academic aspirations and give these students a sense of belonging within the Psychology major. The services and events provided by ASP serve a wide audience: freshmen interested in the major, newly declared students, transfer students and seniors who are choosing their professional paths. ASP aspires to deepen the process of academic preparation and career exploration of the UC Berkeley undergraduates while enhancing the richness of the experience by addressing various needs of local community in the domain of mental health. Academic services include structured study groups in all upper division psychology classes. The more demanding classes are accompanied with mini lectures. Special programs are offered to students who are both psychology and pre health or pre law majors with emphasis on networking with admission offices, peer advisement on successful preparation and application process. ASP also works to acculturate new students to the Berkeley campus through several innovative decal classes. Student Success at Cal is designed to help transfer and incoming students make a successful transition to Cal and the Psychology major, to acquire the necessary skills to make their learning process successful. ASP offers three additional Decal classes entitled "Practical Classroom: A Guided internship," "The Psychology Major and Research" and "Preparation for Grad School in Psychology".

ASP serves as a vehicle to help students interested in the major through providing peer counseling through the Student Services Office. ASP board members also hold office hours daily in the ASP office. ASP coordinates a psychology student mentorship program, where seniors mentor newly declared psychology students to help them acquire the skills needed for them to succeed, by giving them insight into psychology classes, research positions, and being there as support throughout their undergrad career at Berkeley.

ASP requires their members to participate in at least one service project per semester. ASP selects mental health centers, which provide structured training for students, supervise the quality and the intensity of work, and provide guidance. The students play a significant role in helping the quality of mental health services by giving back to the community. These students intern through the mental health internship programs offered by ASP. The students' involvement with mental healthcare services, non-profit organizations and shelters is under professional guidance and supervision of mental health care providers.
