Psychology Commencement - 2017

The reception will be held after Commencement at approximately 4:00 p.m. at the Tolman Breezeway (see map). No tickets are required for the reception. The reception will be catered by Pacific Fine Foods and will include light snacks and beverages.

*The Psychology Department does not have a rehearsal for Commencement. Please familiarize yourself with the ceremony details in advance. Details will be announced several weeks prior to the ceremony.


*Keep in mind, the Psychology commencement ceremony is a smaller, more personal celebration for Psychology Graduate and Undergraduate students. It is separate from the general, campus-wide CAL commencement ceremony. For more information regarding the campus-wide ceremony, please visit:


  • Tickets

    Undergraduate students will receive 2 complimentary tickets.

    Graduate students will receive 3 complimentary tickets.

    Please note, however, that tickets are REQUIRED and that guests will not be allowed to enter the Greek Theatre without a ticket. Children under 2 years of age are required to have a ticket which will be free of charge. Please contact Cal performances for more information.

    Complimentary tickets will be made available through the department in the coming weeks and a notice will be sent out to all who register to participate in the ceremony by the 3/24/17 deadline. Ticket pick-up schedules will be announced via email and on the Psychology Facebook page. Please be prepared to show your Cal Student I.D. card, the printed confirmation of your online registration, and the printed verification of completing the exit survey, which will be posted in the coming week. 

    The Cal Performances Ticket Office will be selling Psychology commencement tickets online via the website, over the phone at 510-642-9988, and at the Ticket Office at Zellerbach Hall (Tues-Fri, 12:00 p.m.-5:30p.m., Sat-Sun, 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.), as well as at the venue on the day of the event beginning one hour before your ceremony. Tickets will be sold online starting Monday, April 4th, at noon.

    All seating, regardless of what the tickets say, is General Admission. SEATS ARE ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS..

  • Diplomas

    Diplomas are not presented at the ceremony; they are usually available about 4 to 5 months after the end of the semester. Graduates may pick up their diploma at the Registrar's Office (120 Sproul Hall) or request that it be mailed to them for a charge. You must have all of your fees paid, returned all library books, and have no other outstanding concerns. For more information, contact the Office of the Registrar.

  • Regalia
    Questions regarding regalia rental may be directed to the Cal Student Store, MLK Student Union, 2495 Bancroft Way, 510-229-4703 , or visit: Honor Cords may be purchased at the store by undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Honors Program.   • Photographs
    The Psychology Department has made arrangements with GradImages to photograph every graduating student. There will be a professional photographer present during the ceremony. A picture will be taken of each student at the moment the commemorative scroll is given to the student by the Psychology Department Chair Professor Ann Kring.     To prevent crowd congestion and to ensure the safety and comfort of all, guests may only take pictures and videos from their seats.

  • Flowers
    Our Department works with a local flower vendor, Ashby Flowers, to make it easy for family and friends to purchase flowers in advance, via their website. The folks at Ashby Flowers have available for delivery directly at our Commencement venue at the Greek Theatre. To ensure routing to the correct venue please enter the “PSYCH2016” code when submitting orders.
  • Parking
    On-campus visitor parking is available in any designated student lot on campus, for a $10 fee. Parking lots near the Greek Theatre include: 1) Foothill Lot (Hearst Ave., east of Highland Ave.) and 2) Lower Hearst Structure, Level 2 (Hearst & Scenic Ave.). See map for parking lots here. Traffic is likely to be heavy around the theater and parking may be difficult, so be sure to allow plenty of time to get there. Please see the Parking & Transportation web site for more information on parking fees, maps and locations, disability parking, and public transportation. 

    There is limited disability parking in the Bowles lot at the south entrance to the Greek Theatre. Please arrive early (by 1:00 p.m.) to ensure parking.
    There is a curbside drop-off area on Gayley Road just north of the Greek Theater entrance for passengers with mobility challenges who prefer to minimize the travel distance to the Greek Theater. We recommend that your guest(s) be dropped off with their companion in front of the Greek Theatre on the north side while someone in your party parks the car in one of the available commencement parking areas. All designated disabled spaces and non-reserved spaces will be available at $10 to disabled patrons with certified disabled placards or license plates on a first-come, first-served basis.   • Weather Considerations
    Please inform your guests that the ceremony is an outdoor event that will take place rain or shine. Guests should be prepared for all weather conditions. Please note that the ceremony will take place in the afternoon and guests face west, towards the setting sun, so they should plan accordingly (with sunglasses, sunscreen, umbrellas, water, sweater or jacket, etc.).

  • Greek Theatre Policies & Information
    The Commencement Ceremony will be held at the Greek Theatre (see map), a large outdoor amphitheater built into the Berkeley hillside. Please recommend to your guests to wear comfortable shoes, the location is hilly and there are steep steps in the theatre. The seating for guests is on concrete benches, so we suggest that they bring along a cushion to sit on. For those unfamiliar with the campus, please view/print this Campus Map.

    The Greek Theatre/UCPD will be checking bags at all entrance gates. The following are prohibited inside the Greek Theatre:

    • Large bags or backpacks
    • Glass bottles/Aluminum cans
    • Alcoholic beverages
    • Coolers/ice chests
    • Baby strollers (designed parking is available inside)
    • Skateboards/bicycles/scooters
    • Musical instruments
    • Fireworks
    • Noise-makers/air horns
    • Rolls of toilet paper
    • Balloons (may be tied-off at the entrance gates at own discretion)
    • Signs/banners/flags
    • Tripods for cameras
    • Animals (with the exception of documented service animals)
    • Lawn furniture or chairs (small blankets, cushions, and low-backed stadium seats are OK)
    • Any items that can be perceived as weapons

    There is no bag or coat check available. All bags are subject to search.

    • In order to accommodate all special seating requests, we can only seat one companion per disabled guest in the special seating area.
    • Special seating is for people who cannot physically manage stairs due to mobility impairments, have a disability that would make egress in the event of an emergency unsafe, or have a service animal that needs adequate space to perform its duties.
    • The North Gate entrance is wheelchair accessible with a ramp that leads up to the entrance gate. Parties that need special seating arrangements are encouraged to arrive as early as one hour prior to the ceremony start time, so as to avoid crowds, and have the best selection for seating.
    • There is no elevator at the Greek Theatre.
    • The Greek Theatre does not provide wheelchairs to the public.
    • The Greek Theater does not provide or guarantee any shaded or padded seating.
    • All special seats are folding metal chairs and are subject to weather conditions.  Hats, cold water, and seat cushions are suggested.
    • The staff at the Greek Theatre will do their best to accommodate everyone's needs for special seating.
  • Disability Accommodation & On-Site Medical Aid
    Please inform the Student Services Office when you sign-up for commencement if you or any of your guests require disability accommodations at the Greek Theatre (e.g., if they are disabled and/or will be using a wheelchair, if they need seating close to an entrance to reduce walking, or if they need an assisted listening device).     There will be a registered nurse and campus security aides on duty during the ceremony should anyone need medical attention. The nurse will be backstage, near the North Gate entrance.

  • Other Important Instructions

    The Greek Theatre gates will open at 1:00 p.m. and the ceremony will start promptly at 2:00 pm.

    GRADUATING STUDENTS, PLEASE ARRIVE AT THE GREEK THEATER ON THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2017, AT 1:00 PM IN ROBE AND READY TO GO. Students in participating should congregate in the backstage area at 1:00 pm, guest should find their seats.

    You will then be given a color coded index card on which to print your first and last name. If pronunciation is a concern, it should be spelled phonetically on the card. You will also be given directions regarding the processional and scroll presentation part of the ceremony by Student Services Staff who will guide you.

    Although we cannot guarantee that you will be able to sit near your friends, your chances of sitting beside them are greatly increased if you are next to each other in the same line backstage (in other words, ask for a card that is the same color as those of your friends).

    After receiving your card, it is impossible to switch cards, so make sure you know what line you want to be in before asking for a corresponding card.

    On cue, the lines will march into the Theater and into the student seating. Please remain standing until Prof. Ivry signals candidates to be seated.

    The first half of the ceremony is dedicated to the announcement of prizes, honors, and speeches.

    In the second half of the ceremony:

        Ph.D. candidates will be hooded individually by their Faculty Advisor.
        B.A. candidates will be presented with a commemorative scroll on stage by Prof. Kring.

    Prof. Kring will then end the ceremony. The audience will remain seated while the students leave the stage.

    The ceremony typically lasts between two and two-and-a-half hours.
