<strong>About the Lecture</strong>
Professor Striker will show how the Stoic philosopher Panaetius, on whose work Cicero based his own treatise, actually presented what might be seen as a complete version of Stoic ethics without the theological and cosmological elements for which Cicero and other Stoics are sometimes criticized.

<strong>About Gisela Striker</strong>
Gisela Striker is Walter C. Klein Professor of Philosophy and of the Classics, Emerita, at Harvard University. She specializes in ancient philosophy, teaching Plato and Aristotle, as well as earlier and later Greek and Roman authors. She has written mostly on topics in Hellenistic philosophy (Stoics, Epicureans, and Skeptics) and Aristotelian logic. She is author of <i>Essays on Hellenistic Epistemology and Ethics</i> (1996) and <i>Aristotle, Prior Analytics book</i> I (translation and commentary), 2009. Her current work is a revision and translation of the text of the Loeb edition of Aristotle’s <i>Rhetoric</i>.

Striker studied philosophy and classics at the universities of Tübingen, Hamburg, and Göttingen in Germany and Oxford in England and received her doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Göttingen in 1969. She taught philosophy at Göttingen from 1971-1986, at Columbia University from 1986-1989, and at Harvard from 1989-1997, and then at the University of Cambridge, England, until 2000 when she returned to Harvard until her retirement in 2011.
